Graduation is a milestone worth celebrating, and the best way to capture this achievement is with a professional photo session. But when exactly should you book your session to get the best results? Here’s a guide to help you plan ahead and ensure your graduation photos are everything you’ve dreamed of!
1. Consider Your Graduation Date
Your graduation date plays a key role in determining when you should book your session. Many graduates opt for photos in the season leading up to their ceremony. If you’re graduating in May or June, you might want to schedule your session in early spring (March or April) when the weather is mild, and campus is full of blooming flowers. If you’re graduating in December, a fall session in October or November can give you rich autumn colors as a backdrop.
2. Book Early to Secure Your Preferred Photographer
Photographers often book up months in advance, especially during peak graduation season. If you have a specific photographer in mind, it’s best to reach out early—at least 2-3 months ahead of time to ensure availability. Last-minute bookings may limit your options, especially if you’re looking for a specific date or location. I currently still have dates available for March, April and May. Since I do this full time I can be a little more flexible with my schedule to make your session work.
3. Think About the Season and Scenery
Different seasons offer unique aesthetics, so consider the look you want for your photos:
Spring: Lush greenery and blooming flowers create a vibrant and fresh feel.
Summer: Golden light and open skies are perfect for a bright, airy look.
Fall: Warm tones and colorful leaves make for stunning, cozy portraits.
Winter: Campus tends to be a little more empty, Cooler weather.
4. Plan Around Your Cap and Gown Arrival
If you want to include your cap and gown in your session, check when they will be available. Some schools distribute them weeks before graduation, while others may provide them closer to the ceremony. ECU hosts their grad expo mid March for you to be able to pick up your cap and gown. Nc State lets you order year round. If you want to capture both casual and cap-and-gown shots, plan your session accordingly.
5. Avoid Stress by Scheduling in Advance
Senior year is packed with exams, projects, and events, so the last thing you want is to feel rushed. Booking your session early allows to have control when it comes to picking popular weekend or afternoon time slots ensuring a relaxed and enjoyable experience.
6. Consider Off-Peak Times for More Flexibility
If you’re looking for more flexibility in scheduling or a less crowded location, consider booking your session in the off-season. Summer and early fall can be great alternatives if you don’t need your photos immediately for announcements. I have plenty of availability after graduation photos immediately following the week of Graduation.
7. Factor in Editing and Prints
If you need your photos for graduation announcements or invitations, factor in time for editing and printing. Many photographers take 2-4 weeks for final edits, so scheduling your session at least a month before you need the images is a smart move. My turnaround time is is on the quicker side with a 1-2 week delivery. I also offer an expedited next day delivery option for those who prefer not to wait.
Final Thoughts
No matter when you choose to book your session, the key is planning ahead. The best time to schedule your grad session depends on your personal style, the season you love, and how you plan to use your photos. Reach out to your photographer early, choose a season that fits your vision, and enjoy the process of celebrating your achievement!
